MERION STATION, Pa. – A wild play in the bottom of the eighth inning scored a pair of runs to lead the Saint Joseph's baseball team to a 4-3 win and a three-game sweep of George Washington at Smithson Field on Sunday afternoon.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (20-13 overall, 6-3 Atlantic 10) got out to an early lead with a three-hit first inning; a single by
Brendan Hueth brought
Nate Thomas home with the game's first run.
Â
• The Hawks doubled the lead in the third on an RBI single by
Andrew Cossetti that scored
Conlan Wall.
Â
• George Washington (17-19 overall, 5-4 Atlantic 10) broke through in the fifth, plating three runs on three hits and two walks.
Â
• SJU took the lead back on a bizarre sequence in the bottom of the eighth. With Thomas at second and Cossetti at first with nobody out, Hueth attempted to lay a bunt down the third base line. The ball was caught by a charging Ty Acker at third, but in an attempt to double up Cossetti, his throw sailed into right field. Thomas came around third, and the cutoff throw to the plate by first baseman Derek Ripp got away, allowing Thomas to score and leading Cossetti to come home as well. The throw was dropped at the plate, Cossetti was safe, and the Hawks had the lead.
Â
•
Ryan Devine then came on from the bullpen for the second consecutive day and sent the Colonials down in order, striking out the final two batters of the game.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Devine notched his second save of the season, while
Alec Rodriguez earned the win after throwing a scoreless eighth, striking out two of his own. The pair combined with
Mike Falco to retire 13 of the final 14 George Washington hitters of the game.
Â
• Rich Pfluger took the loss for the Colonials, allowing two unearned runs on no hits and two walks in two innings of relief.
Â
•
Noah Weber had a strong start for the Hawks, allowing three hits in four shutout innings while striking out two and walking none.
Â
• Cossetti and Hueth racked up a pair of hits on the day, while Thomas scored two runs.
Â
• The win is the 20
th of the season for Saint Joseph's, marking the 11
th consecutive full season that the Hawks have reached the 20-win plateau. Prior to 2011, SJU had posted 20 wins or more only nine times in total in program history.
