Baseball Pounds Out 20 Hits En Route to 15-8 win over Quinnipiac

MERION STATION, Pa. – Ryan Cesarini drove in five runs in his first collegiate start and Nate Thomas hit his second home run in as many days as the Saint Joseph's baseball team racked up 20 hits in a 15-8 win over Quinnipiac on a windy, cold, and occasionally snowy Saturday afternoon at Smithson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Quinnipiac (0-2) drew first blood on a two-run double by Sebastian Mueller in the first, but an RBI single by Max Hitman in the bottom of the inning cut the Hawk deficit in half.

• A sacrifice fly in the top of the third got the run back for the Bobcats, but with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, Cesarini hit one to the wall in right center to clear the bases and give the Hawks the lead at 4-3.

• Saint Joseph's (2-0) extended the lead in the fifth on an RBI single by Brendan Hueth, who then scored on a passed ball to make it a 6-3 game.

• Quinnipiac scored a run before a snow squall moved through the area in the sixth, which coupled with high winds led to a brief delay in play; after the restart, Matt McShane was able to get out of the inning without further damage.

• A single by Jake Artz, another passed ball, and a groundout by Hueth extended the advantage to 9-4 in the bottom of the sixth.

• The visitors cut it to 9-6 in the top of the eighth, but in the bottom half of the inning, the Hawks would send 10 men to the plate to put the game away.  Artz was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and bring up Thomas, whose home run into the Bobcat bullpen made it 11-6 for the home team.

• Hitman would add another RBI single before Cesarini doubled home two more and then came home on a wild pitch.

• The Bobcats scored twice in the top of the ninth, but Ryan Devine induced a fielder's choice with two on and two out to end it.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Luke Smith allowed three runs, two of them earned, on seven hits while striking out six across five innings to earn his first win of the season.  Kevin Seitter gave up six runs on 11 hits in five innings to take the loss.

• Four Hawks notched three hits apiece on the day: Cesarini, Hitman, Brett Callahan, and Brandon Drapeau.

• Hitman, Hueth, and Thomas each drove in two runs to go with Cesarini's five RBI, while Artz and Hueth led the way with three runs scored apiece.

• Each hitter in the SJU lineup recorded at least one hit in the game.
