SJU to Induct McIntyre, Vliet into Men's Soccer Hall of Fame

PHILADELPHIA – John McIntyre '94 (Philadelphia, Pa./North Catholic) and Sean Vliet '96 (Pennsauken, N.J./Camden Catholic) will be enshrined in the Saint Joseph's University Men's Soccer Hall of Fame at halftime of the Hawks' game against Duquesne on Saturday, October 22. The tandem played a key role in the resurgence of the SJU program in the early 1990s.

One of the most dynamic offensive players in SJU history, McIntyre teamed with current SJU head coach Don D'Ambra to form one of the most potent scoring duos in the country during their time on Hawk Hill. The only player in program history to earn All-Atlantic 10 First Team honors three times (1991, 1992, 1993), McIntyre ranks third all-time with 27 career goals, while standing second in SJU history with 20 assists and 74 points. His 10 assists in 1993 are still a school single-season record. He was also an All-Mid-Atlantic Region selection in 1993, in addition to being a two-time Philadelphia Soccer Seven All-Star (1992, 1993). Following his Hawk career, he played professionally indoor for the Milwaukee Wave and Philadelphia Kixx of the MISL and served as an assistant girls' soccer coach at Archbishop Ryan High School. He continues to coach at the youth level.

Arguably the top goalkeeper in Hawk history, Vliet was stellar in net for the Crimson and Gray, setting single-season (149) and career (530) records for saves during his four seasons. Emerging as a starter midway through his freshmen year, he garnered All-Atlantic 10 recognition three times (First Team – 1994, Second Team – 1992, 1993) and was a two-time Soccer Seven All-Star (1993, 1995). Ranking second on SJU's all-time list with 21 career shutouts, he helped the Hawks post back-to-back 10 win seasons, while advancing to the Atlantic 10 Championship in both 1993 and 1994. He received the Class of 1950 Award, as SJU's top graduating senior athlete, in 1996. Since graduating from Hawk Hill, he has had an extensive career as an executive in the oil industry as well as a restaurateur.

In 1993, McIntyre and Vliet teamed up to lead the Hawks to one of the best single seasons in program history. That year, SJU set a school record with 12 wins, captured their first-ever Soccer Seven title and qualified for the A-10 Championship for the first time, advancing to the conference title game.

The Men's Soccer Hall of Fame induction will be held in conjunction with the program's Alumni Day on October 22. The festivities will commence with an Alumni Game at 3:00 PM on Sweeney Field, followed by a tailgate. The Hawks host Duquesne at 7:00 p.m. with the induction ceremony slated for halftime.
