SJU RUNS 18TH AT PAUL SHORT INVITATIONAL

BETHLEHEM, PA (10/6/01) - The Saint Joseph's University women's cross country team looked sluggish in its first meet in two weeks, placing 18th at the Paul Short Invitational. The event, hosted for the 28th straight year by Lehigh University, featured 39 women's teams with Penn State winning the team title with a score of 109 points. Part of the reason SJU slipped so far from the pack was that its top runner, senior Denise Fergus, missed the meet due to illness. Sophomore Sarah Bright turned in a good performance for the Hawks in Fergus absence, placing first on the team and 78th overall in a time of 22:49.33. Freshman Colleen Flanagan and sophomore Karen Weber also cracked the Top 100 overall finishers, placing 93rd and 98th, respectively, with times of 23:02.79 and 23:05.93. Later that evening, head coach Kevin Quinn was one of 12 inductees into the Saint Joseph's University Athletics Hall of Fame. Rhode Island's Erin Silvering was the individual champion, running in a time of 21:08.00.
