HAWK MEN AND WOMEN PLACE FIFTH AT A-10 TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS
RICHMOND, VA (5/02/04) - The Saint Joseph's men and women each placed fifth at the 2004 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Rhode Island claimed both the men's and women's titles. On the women's side, Hawk sophomore Andria Smythe blitzed the track in the 100m dash with an eye-popping time of 11.78, setting a new A-10 record and meeting NCAA qualifications. She had captured the long jump the previous day with a leap of 19-4. Two other Hawks earned first team all-conference honors individually with Thuy Nguyen winning the 800m in a time of 2:12.97 and Sarah Click capturing the high jump with a leap of 5-5. SJU also had tremendous success in the relays with the 4x800 taking first place and both the 4x400 and 4x100 each finishing second. Following Rhode Island and Richmond in the women's standings were Massachusetts (106.5), Duquesne (98.5), Saint Joseph's (96), La Salle (70.5), Dayton (62), Temple (60.5), and Fordham (29). For the men, sophomore Andrew Thomas took first in the 800m with a time of 1:53.18. Collin Martin won the 5000 in 15:15.04 and was second in the 3000m Steeplechase in a time of 9:05.55. The Hawks also won the 4x400 relay. URI, which totaled 247 points, was followed in the standings by La Salle (142.5), Massachusetts (122), Duquesne (106), Saint Joseph's (81), Fordham (55), Richmond (51), and Temple (45.5).
