THIRD PLACE FINISH FOR HAWK WOMEN AT A-10 INDOOR MEET
KINGSTON, RI (2/21/04) - Sophomores Andria Smythe and Thuy Nguyen each earned first team All-Atlantic 10 honors by winning the 55m Dash and the 800m, respectively, to lead the Saint Joseph's women to a third place team finish on Saturday at the 2004 A-10 Indoor Track & Field Championships, held at the University of Rhode Island's Mackal Field House.
The only Hawks to earn All-Conference honors, Smythe captured the 55m sprinting to gold in a time of 7.05. Nguyen, meanwhile captured the 800 in 2:14.87.
Seven other Hawks narrowly missed All-League recognition by placing third, including Smythe (25.50) in the 200m. Other Hawks to finish third were Julie Lentz in the 400m (58.53), Mary Crossin in the 1000 (2:59.54) , Colleen Flanagan in the 3000m (10:14.70) and the 4x400, 4x800 and Distance Medley Relays.
Rhode Island scored a meet record 186 points in winning its fourth A-10 crown. After winning the 2003 A-10 women's title, Richmond placed second with 147 points, followed by Saint Joseph's (87), Duquesne (83), La Salle (62), Dayton (61), Temple (48), Massachusetts (41) and Fordham (22). Duquesne's fourth-place showing was its highest in program history after finishing fifth a year ago.
Dayton senior Khaleelah Sneed was named the Championship's Most Outstanding Track Performer, URI's Pascale Delaunaygarnered Most Outstanding Field Performer honors and freshman Caitlin Smyth of Richmond claimed Most Outstanding Rookie honors. Laurie Feit-Melnick was voted A-10 Coach of the Year for a league-record sixth time.
