SPLIT HAWK SQUAD FAIRS WELL AT PSU AND WIDENER
PHILADELPHIA (1/31/04) - Long-time SJU head coach Kevin Quinn divided his charges on Saturday sending Hawk contingents to both the highly-regarded Penn State National Invitational and the Widener Invite with both groups turning in solid results.
At PSU a youthful batch of Hawks delivered a strong effort against a highly-competetive field of national competition. Sophomore Andria Smythe, competing in three events, ran a 7.67 in the 60m dash, 25.97 in the 200m and leaped 18-5.75 in the long jump, all among the Atlantic 10's best this season.
Freshman Stacey Cronin (58.37) and junior Colleen Ladden (58.47) showed well in the 400, turning in the A-10's third and fourth best times in the event this season and also were members of the 4x400 raly that turned in the league's second best time in 2004 (3:55.90).
Other top efforts were turned in by freshmen Amanda Guthridge (1:17.45) and Julie Lentz (1:18.91) in the 500m, rookie Rebecca Powell (2:57.67) in the 1000m, junior Colleen Flanagan (10:19.43) in the 3000m and senior Amy Manwaring (17:55.41) in the 5000.
At Widener, SJU dominated the middle distance, placing six runners in the top 11 of the 800m and five in the top 11 of the 1500m. Erin Kelly (2:27.33) and Suzie McHenry (2:30.27) placed one-two in the 800 and McHenry (5:02.03) returned to place third in the 1500. SJU also won the 4x400 in a time of 4:19.85.
Additional high finishes were delivered by Lauren Manfredi (1:03.52), who finished fourth in the 400, Erin O;Donnell (11:19.33) and Karen Weber (11:19.57), who went four-five in the 3000, and Lynn Puzzo (14-08.75), who placed fourth in the high jump.
