HAWKS PLACE THIRD AT A-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS

DAYTON, OH (5/6/01) - The St. Joseph's women's track team had an outstanding showing at the Verizon Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships, finishing third overall with 143 points. The Hawks were led by their jumpers, particularly the high-jumping trio of seniors Gina Bundy and Bernadette Speer and freshman Sarah Click, who placed 1-2-3, respectively in their event. Bundy was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer after winning the high jump with a leap of 5'4.05", the heptathlon with 4,295 points and the triple jump with a leap of 37'10.75. It was only the second time Bundy had competed in the Heptathlon with the first time being her freshman year at Pittsburgh when she won the Big East title. Speer placed second with a leap of 5'4.5"and Click jumped third (5'2.5"). Senior Christine Kane defended her 3,000 meter crown, taking first in a time of 9:53.90. She also placed second in the 1,500 (4:28.86) and third in the 800 (2:13.70) while senior Gabby Quezada placed fifth (2:14.75). Quezada also placed fourth in the 1,500 (4:36.73). Sophomore Maisha Tyler was also victorious for the Hawks, winning the long jump with a leap of 18' 3.25". Tyler also placed fifth in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes while junior Brooke Gilliford placed fourth in the 100 and sixth in the 200. Also scoring for SJU were freshman Karen Weber (39:41.80), who ran fourth at 10,000 meters, and Denise Fergus (10:22.91), who finished fifth at 5,000 meters and seventh at 3,000 meters. Junior Mary Korfmacher placed fourth in the 400 meter dash (58.05) while Erin Blaustein placed sixth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:06.96) with Emily Horton right behind (1:07.45).
