HAWKS PLACE FOURTH AT ATLANTIC 10 CHAMPIONSHIPS

KINGSTON, RI- The St. Joseph's women's track team claimed fourth place at the 2001 Verizon Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships last Saturday at Rhode Island's Mackal Field House. Senior Gina Bundy, who won the triple jump and finished second in the high jump, earned the Most Outstanding Field Performer Award while senior Christine Kane established a championship meet mark in the mile run (4:53.55). The Hawks crowned four champions, including senior Bernadette Speer, who won the high jump (5'8") for the second consecutive year. Kane claimed two victories, winning both the mile run with her record breaking performance, and the 3000 meter run (9:57.47). Freshman Maisha Tyler claimed the gold in the long jump with a leap of 18'3 3/4", her personal best. Junior Brooke Gilliford earned silver in the 55 meter dash with a school record 7.24 seconds while placing fourth in the 200 meter dash (25.95). Junior Denise Fergus claimed silver in the 5000 meter run (17:43.83) while the 4x800 relay team of Katie Limbach, Mary Korfmacher, Melissa Wilbeck, and Kane placed second (9:30.14). First place finishers earn first-team all-conference honors while second place finishers make the all-conference second team.
