McMullen Paces Hawks on First Day at A-10 Championships

KINGSTON, R.I -- The Saint Joseph's women's track and field squad earned a tie for seventh after the first day of competition at the A-10 Indoor Championships in Rhode Island. Nicole McMullen and the DMR squad were the lone point-earners as McMullen finished second in the long jump and the DMR was fifth. McMullen's silver place finish was the best of the day for the Hawks, who struggled during the preliminary day. McMullen leapt 18-10, good for second and eight valuable points. The relay squad of Kathleen Casey, Lauren Wenzel, Anna Casey and Andrea Florida capped the day for the Hawks, running a time of 12:16.71, good for fifth. The fifth-place finish earned four points. Many of the Hawks who participated in the sprints struggled to qualify for tomorrow's finals. SJU was shut out of qualifiers in the 55m, 55m Hurdles, 200m, 400m, and 500m dashes. The middle distance events shined as Anna Casey and Kristin Andrews qualified for the 800m finals tomorrow. Casey won her heat in a time of 2:16.70, good for fifth, while Andrews was the last qualifier to make it to tomorrows proceedings, running a time of 2:17.66. Kelsey Rose won her heat as well, running a time of 3:01.51 to earn fifth place and advance to tomorrow's finals as well.
SJU will complete competition at the Mackal Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Rhode Island tomorrow afternoon. Dayton leads the women's overall standings wiht 51 points, 17 ahead of Richmond.
