A Note From Coach Quinn
April 15, 2006
Charlottesville, VA - Freshmen were in the forefront of the Hawks' efforts at the Lou Onesty meet at the University of Virginia. Lauren Slack had a very busy weekend and is quietly emerging as a potential force in the Atlantic 10. Due to injuries to several sprinters, Slack has been pressed into leadoff duty on the 4x100 and has acquitted herself very well. The team is currently ranked third in the conference with a 48.80 clocking. Slack is also ranked third in the conference in the long jump (18' ½"), sixth in the hurdles (15.40), sixth in the high jump (5'3") and eighth in the triple jump (35'9"). The sprint group and relays lost another prime athlete when Lauren Wallace, third leg on the 4x100 and leadoff on the 4x400 pulled a hamstring. Replacing Wallace on the 4x100 will be Valerie Ramirez and Lauren Fike in the 4x400. Ramirez is coming on strong after a lengthy illness set her back and Fike is currently ranked fourth with a 65.70 best and has shown improvement in every meet over the long hurdles. Ramirez ran 15.70 for the hurdles and won her section of the 100 at UVA. The Hawks have two athletes listed in the conference top ten in the javelin. Senior Lynn Puzzo is ranked fifth (118'6") and freshman Christina Brenner (106'5") is ranked 10th. Puzzo placed 11th at UVA. Freshman high jumper Natalie Miller stands second with a 5'5" clearance and is poised to climb higher. On the oval the junior class has started to assert itself with performances and leadership. Suzanne McHenry moved down and ran a very strong 4:43.39 in the 1,500 while Rebecca Powell ran aggressively over the last 300 meters to an eighth place finish in the 800m and a 2:16.02 clocking. Erin Kelly continues to improve tactically and the breakthrough is there waiting to be grasped. Julie Lentz continues to impress with strong efforts at 400.
The freshmen and sophomore distance runners continue to gain experience and watch as their times improve. |
