Freshmen Shine at Ursinus Indoor Classic
Jan. 20, 2006 Collegeville, PA - The freshmen proved invaluable for the Hawks, scoring 59 of Saint Joseph's 98 points Friday at the Ursinus Indoor Classic. The Hawks went on to earn a second place finish out of nine teams for the day. Junior Valerie Ramirez set a new school record in the 55m hurdle with a time of 8.60 in the preliminary race and then went on to place first in the finals in 8.61. The record was previously held by all-time SJU performer Donna Crumety who set the record in 1989 with a hand time of 8.6. Freshmen Natalie Miller and Lauren Slack each had breakout days earning 16 and 23 points respectively. Miller placed first in the high jump (5-03.75) with Slack following close behind tying for second place with 5-01.75. Miller also placed third in the triple jump (33-03.25) and eighth in the 200m (29.06). Slack earned herself a first place finish in the long jump (16-09.75) along with finishing ninth in the 55m hurdle preliminaries and third in the 200m (27.69). Other notable freshmen performances came from Amy Rhein, placing first in the 5,000 (19:10.51), Juli Stensland, placing fourth in the mile (5:28.89) and Lauren Walsh, placing second in the 400m. Senior Genevieve Story added to the scoring tally finishing first in the mile (5:23.63) and fifth in the 800m (2:25.06). Other top finishers for the day included junior Maddie Bell finishing second in the 5,000m (19:18.76) and Adrienne Beltz who placed third in the mile (5:24.76).
The Hawks earned five first-place finishes for the day and 12 top-three finishes and scored in every event that they entered. Saint Joseph's return to action at the Penn State National Invitational Friday January 27th and Saturday January 28th. |
