Long Island Defeats Women's Tennis

FLUSHING, NY - he Saint Joseph's women's tennis team was unable to get back on track against Long Island suffering a 5-2 setback at the U.S. National Tennis Center. Sophomore Erika Guers and freshman Gina Digiacomo picked up the Hawks points winning at fourth and sixth singles.

LIU took the early lead by capturing the doubles point, winning at number one and number two doubles by identical 8-4 scores. DiGiacomo and sophomore Maris Donelson did post a victory at #3 easily defeating Andrea Pertab and Xenia Roman, 8-1.

In the singles, LIU swept the first three positions. Merue Koksal downed Nicole Morrison at number one, 6-0, 6-2; Veronica Apostu-Efremou beat Michelle Savage at number two 6-4, 6-1 and Krystina Bachner defeated Jess Swanderski, 6-0, 6-2. Long Island also delivered a win at number five with Claudia Arteaga topping Alisa Van Meter, 6-1, 6-1.

The Hawks' singles wins came from Guers and DiGiacomo. Guers won over Ellen Awolin, 6-4, 6-2, and DiGiacomo notched a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jasmine Grays.
