Rider Surprises Women's Tennis, 4-3

Oct. 7, 2004

PHILADELPHIA - Despite sweeping the final three singles positions, the Saint Joseph's women's tennis team (3-6) was surprised by Rider (4-2) on the Finnesey Courts, 4-3. Sophomore Erika Guers and freshman Gina Digiacomo picked up two of SJU's three wins.

The Hawks got off to a rocky start by dropping the doubles point to the Broncs, a team SJU had beaten four straight times dating back to 1999. Senior Michele Savage and sophomore Alisa Van Meter lost 8-1 at first doubles and DiGiacomo and sophomore Marisa Donelson then suffered their first loss of the year, 8-2, at second doubles. Rider forfeited the third doubles slot.

In singles, Rider took the first three singles points as Nicole Morrison fell 6-2, 6-2 at number one, Savage lost 6-3, 6-0 at number two and Jess Swanderski dropped a 6-0, 6-0 match at number three.

Guers posted a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Logan Kapinus at fourth and DiGiacomo was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Dana Previti at five. Van Meter picked up a forfeit win at sixth singles.

SJU concludes the home portion of its schedule on Sunday against Drexel.
