2003-04 WOMEN'S TENNIS REVIEW

PHILADELPHIA (5/24/04) -- Highlighted by its best Atlantic 10 showing in three years, the Saint Joseph's women's tennis team wrapped up another solid season on the courts. Led by seniors Pilar Glodzik and Katie Bobish, the Hawks finished with a 5-8 record and a ninth place finish at the A-10 Championships.

SJU got off to a rough start, losing its first three matches, but rebounded to defeat Rider and Towson to improve to 2-3 in late September. Two close losses at the hands of La Salle and Loyola (Md.) by identical 4-3 scores left the Crimson and Gray with a 2-6 record with only two dual matches remaining in the fall season.

The Hawks split their final two matches, defeating Drexel and losing to Delaware, before the winter moved the team indoors to prepare for the conference tournament. Despite not playing a single match for nearly six months, St. Joe's performed admirably at the Atlantic 10 Championships.

After a 4-0 loss to George Washington, the Hawks rebounded with a 4-2 win over Rhode Island and another 4-2 victory over La Salle. With the wins, SJU finished in ninth place for its best finish since the 2001 season.

Individually, Glodzik and Bobish moved up to the number one and two singles spots, respectively. Glodzik struggled to a 2-11 record at the top spot, but finished her career eighth on the all-time wins list with 25.

Bobish, meanwhile, was 3-10 at #2 singles to move past Kim Kashon '96 into second place on the all-time wins list with 37 career victories. Her 37-19 record produced the second highest winning percentage (.661) in Hawk history.

Sophomore Nicole Morrison (6-4) had a strong season at the #3 spot and joined junior Michelle Savage (5-7 at #4) in the middle of the lineup. Two underclassmen, sophomore Jess Swanderski and freshman Erika Guers, played exceptionally at #5 and #6 singles for veteran head coach Al Laveson. Swanderski went 7-5, mostly at #5, and Guers was 8-4 from the #6 spot.

Saint Joseph's loses its top two players in Glodzik and Bobish, but will look to improve on a solid 2003-04 campaign next year.
