HAWKS UPEND RHODY, 4-2, AT A-10'S

COLLEGE PARK, MD (4/17/04) -- Saint Joseph's won the doubles point and took home the final three singles matches to earn a 4-2 victory over Rhode Island in the Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championships on Saturday. SJU advances to face La Salle in the 9th place match.

Junior Michelle Savage teamed with freshman Erika Guers for a 8-3 win at #2 doubles and sophomore Jess Swanderski and freshman Marisa Donelson paired up for an 8-5 victory at #3 to secure the doubles point.

In singles action, the Hawks dropped the first two matches but the fourth through sixth spots came up big for head coach Al Laveson. Savage won a tough three-set match, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5, at #4. Swanderski had a much easier time, taking a 6-0, 6-1 win at #5. Guers, meanwhile, needed three sets to dispatch her URI opponent, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.

SJU improves to 4-8 on the season.
