2003-04 WOMEN'S TENNIS OUTLOOK
PHILADELPHIA (09/02/03) -- Despite the loss, veteran mentor Al Laveson, who passed the 400 career win mark last fall, does welcome back two senior starters and co-captains in Pilar Glodzik and Katie Bobish. Glodizk, who has progressed from fourth singles to first singles incrementally during her tenure here, strung together four wins last season.
Bobish, meanwhile, has amassed 34 career wins, good for third all-time on Hawk Hill. Her 11 wins at fourth singles last year were tied for tops on the team, but the Aliquippa, Pa. native will be asked to make the jump to second singles this season.
Sophomore Nicole Morrison returns for her second season after an impressive rookie year at SJU. The Florida product had no problem adjusting to the colder climate, compiling an 11-3 mark from mostly the number five spot in singles. Like Bobish, she makes the leap to third singles this season.
At number four singles, junior Michelle Savage looks to return from a shoulder injury that sidelined her for most of last season. Laveson hopes she can return to the form of her freshman year, when she posted a 7-5 record.
Jess Swanderski has moved into the fifth singles position after a strong rookie year in which she produced a 9-2 record at the #6 spot. The sophomore also was effective on the doubles side, going 8-5 with graduated senior Kathy Fromuth.
Glodzik and Morrison will move up to the first doubles spot after earning six wins at number two last year, while Bobish should team with Swanderski at number two. The final doubles spot is wide open, with several returnees and newcomers battling for time.
Senior co-captains Kristin Cammarota and Jamie Lomas will vie for time in the starting lineup, as will sophomores Nora Burke and Sofia Carreno. A number of freshmen could see time as well.
With a number of players moving up in the lineup, Laveson needs production from his returnees and hopes that his freshman class can adjust to the college ranks. The Hawks look to improve on the squad's 11th place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships and produce back-to-back .500 seasons for the first time since 1989-90.
