Hawks Down La Salle 6-1

PHILADELPHIA, PA(09/27/01) - The Saint Joseph's University women's tennis team was victorious over La Salle 6-1 during Thursday afternoon's season home opener. Juniors Lydia Thomas, the Hawks #2 singles player,and Jill Simodejka, #4, both charged over Explorer foes Christina Stefan 6-1, 6-0 and Denise Chambers 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 for SJU wins. Sophomores Pilar Glodzik and Katie Bobish also picked up victories over their opponents while freshman Michelle Savage nabbed a 6-2,6-2 win over La Salle's Kristen Hess at #6. Junior Jance Hoy was downed at the #1 slot 6-1, 6-2. The Hawks blanked the Explorers in doubles action winning all three matches 9-7, 8-0, 8-5. This is the second year Saint Joseph's has held La Salle to only 1 point. Last season the Hawks beat the Explorers 8-1. SJU is now 1-1 in dual matches. The Hawks return to Finnesey courts Saturday, September 29 when they face the Blue Hens of Delaware. The match is set for noon.
