Review 2000-01

An injection of youthful exuberance coupled with the leadership of several key returnees was critical to a much improved Hawk squad during the 2000-01 season. Despite a ninth-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships, the Hawks enjoyed their first winning season since 1989-90. They also posted the most wins in the program's history. Senior captain Allison Popen, who held down the #1 singles slot for the fourth straight year, tallied an overall record of 11-6. Included in that mark were a pair of matches at the prestigious 2000 Women's ITA Eastern Region Championship. Her 11 wins gave her 47 for her career, the most by any Hawk in school history. Popen also played #1 doubles, teaming with freshman Katie Bobish for most of the year, where they posted a 5-10 record. In addition to Popen, sophomores Jance Hoy, Lydia Thomas, and Jill Simodejka added experience to the lineup. Hoy posted an 8-6 record at #2 singles while Thomas recorded a 7-7 record at #3 singles. Simodejka moved down to the #5 slot this season, posting an 8-6 record. Thomas and Simodejka also teamed up at #3 doubles, winning an impressive 10 matches. One of the keys to the Hawks' success this season was the impressive play of freshmen Pilar Glodzik and Bobish. Bobish posted the most wins on the squad, posting a 13-1 record at #6 singles. In just her first season, Bobish set a new school record for wins in a season and career at the #6 spot. Glodzik was also effective at #4 singles, recording a 12-3 record. Glodzik's 12 wins also are a school record for wins in a season at #4 singles. Hoy and Glodzik teamed up at #2 doubles and recorded a 10-5 record. Included in that mark was a match at the ITA Eastern Region Championships.
