Hawks' Velazquez Earns A-10 Women's Tennis All-Conference Honors

May 1, 2007

PHILADELPHIA - After posting one of the best seasons at No. 1 singles in Saint Joseph's women's tennis history, junior Stephania Velazquez was recognized for her performance by being named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team, conference officials announced Tuesday. Velazquez is only the second Hawk, and first since Kim Kashon in 1996, to earn A-10 All-Conference honors.

In her first season with the Hawks, Velazquez posted an 11-11 record at No. 1 singles, tying for third-most single-season individual wins in that flight. A transfer from Louisville, she is tied for the fourth most wins all-time at No. 1 singles (11), while her victories tied for seventh most wins in a season in all flights.

Helping Saint Joseph's tie for 11th place at the 2007 Atlantic 10 Championships, Velazquez also posted a 10-4 record at No. 1 doubles. Going 2-0 at the conference championships, she helped set a new program mark for wins in a season as the Hawks finished the year 12-10. Stephania is the second member of her family to earn A-10 All-Conference honors as her brother, and current assistant coach, Francisco Velazquez was a four-time honoree (2002-05) for Saint Joseph's.
