Saint Joseph's Women's Tennis Blanks Lafayette, 7-0
Sept. 29, 2006 PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's tennis put forth a dominant performance for the second time this week as the Hawks blanked Lafayette, 7-0, at Finnesey Courts Friday afternoon. Coming off a 6-1 win over La Salle Tuesday, Saint Joseph's gained the early advantage versus the Leopards, sweeping all three doubles matches. Playing at No. 1 doubles, the team of freshman Jennifer Kedzierski and junior Stephania Velazquez earned an 8-4 win for the Hawks, while Gina DiGiacomo and Marisa Donelson earned the point for SJU with an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles. Saint Joseph's sophomore Krysta Contino and junior Lauren Kuhmerker earned the sweep of the doubles matches with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles. Individually, the Hawks were straight-set winners in all six matches. Velazquez set the tone for SJU with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Ansley Scudder at No. 1 singles, while Kedzierski downed Sarah Sykes 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Junior Erika Guers posted a 6-4, 7-5 win for the Hawks at No. 3 singles, while DiGiacomo downed Nancy Parker 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4 singles. Contino and Donelson earned wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, to close the shutout for Saint Joseph's. With the win, the Hawks improve to 7-2 on the season, while Lafayette falls to 1-1 on the year with the loss. Saint Joseph's returns to action Saturday, September 30, when the Hawks host Rhode Island at noon.
