Delaware Blanks Women's Netters
Sept. 21, 2005 PHILADELPHIA - Despite hanging tough in doubles, the Saint Joseph's women's tennis team (0-1) dropped its season opener to Delaware (1-0) on the Finnesey Courts, 7-0. The Hawks kept matches close at second and third doubles, but were unable to prevail before being swept in the singles competition. Sophomore Gina DiGiacomo and junior Marisa Donelson turned int eh days best effort for teh Grimson and Gray, but were topped by UD's Sari Shuster and Alexa Dragonette at #2 doubles, 8-6. Freshman Krysta Contino and junior Erika Guers also battled before succumbing, 8-5, at #3 doubles to the Blue Hen's Liz Perlow and Brittany Barsky. In singles, the Hawks took just three games at the first three singles positions as senior Nicole Morrison was downed at #1 by UD's Susan Pollack (6-0, 6-0), Guers fell at #2 to Amanda Campbell (6-0, 6-1), while senior Jess Swanderski was tripped up at #3 by Perlow (6-1, 6-1). SJU faired better at the lower singles slots, but was still anable to claim a set. DiGiacomo was downed at #4 by Shuster (6-3, 6-1) and Contino fell by an identical score to Barsky at #5. Junior Alisa Van Meter was defeated at #6 by the Hen's Kate Ianelli (6-1, 6-1). The Hawks travel to RHode Island next Tuesday.
