ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The 11th-seeded Saint Joseph's women's tennis team put up a strong fight, but eventually fell to the sixth-seeded Massachusetts Minutewomen, 4-1, Friday afternoon in the opening round of the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championship at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center. The Hawks got a victory from the pair of junior Maggie Mullaney and sophomore Sally Kalani Stainier at No. 2 doubles to start the match. The SJU pair posted an 8-5 victory, but Massachusetts gained the doubles point with an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles and and 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles. Needing four wins in singles competition, Mullaney got Saint Joseph's on the board with a 6-1, 1-6 victory over Candyce Boney as the Minutewomen's no. 2 player had to retire. Unfortunately for the Hawks, the higher-seeded Massachusetts squad proved to be too much on the day, earning wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 singles to advance. Saint Joseph's will now face La Salle in the 11th-place match on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. The Hawks have previously beaten the Explorers 7-0 earlier this season. Singles
