Hawks Fall to Duquesne, Bona at A-10 Championship
April 21, 2006 MONROEVILLE, PA - The twelfth-seeded Saint Joseph's women's tennis team dropped a 5-0 decision to fifth-seeded Duquesne in the opening round of the 2006 Atlantic 10 Championship held at Club 4 Life. SJU then dropped a 4-1 decision to St. Bonaventure in the tournament's consolation bracket. The Hawks struggled against the Dukes. DU started things off by securing teh doubles point as Nicole Morrison and Jess Swanderski fell ast number one, 8-1, and Gina DiGiacomo and Marisa Donelson were defeated at number two, 8-3. In singles, SJU struggled, winning just seven games. Morrison dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision at number one, junior Erika Guers was bested 6-0, 6-3 at number two, Swanderski fell 6-0, 6-0 at three and freshman Krysta Contino was defeated at number five, 6-0, 6-2. In the team's first consolation match, SJU had high hopes against St. Bonaventure, but the Bonnies prevailed, 4-1. The doubles point was hard-fought before the Bonnies prevailed 2-1. Contino and junior Lauren Kuhmerker won at third doubles, 8-1, while Morrison and Swanderski fell at number one, 8-3. In teh decisive match DiGiacomo and Donelson were edged 8-6. In singles, Reshman Moorthy notched a 6-1, 6-2 win at six and Guers and DiGiacomo held leads when the match was called. Morrison fell at number one, Swanderski lost at number three and Contino dropped a decision at fifth singles.
