Women's Tennis Falls to Charlotte in A-10 First Round
April 17, 2009 PHILADELPHIA - Fifth-seeded Charlotte defeated 12th-seeded Saint Joseph's, 4-0, in the opening match of the 2009 Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship on Friday. Charlotte jumped out to a 1-0 edge in the matchup, claiming the doubles' point. The 49ers' Ana Spivakovsky and Yudeshnee Pillay topped the Hawks' Jennifer Kedzierski and Laura Matz, 8-0 at No.1 doubles, while the Saint Joseph's pair of Katy Borden and Sally Kalani Stainier lost 8-0 at No. 3 doubles. Switching to singles, the Hawks had several strong showings, but Charlotte was able to earn three points, thwarting possible Saint Joseph's upsets. Charlotte's Andrea Rivera topped Matz, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 singles, while Kimber Redfern beat Saint Joseph's senior Krysta Contino, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. The 49ers claimed the final point as Gabi Vergara topped sophomore Katy Borden, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
