April 10, 2010 PHILADELPHIA - Playing in front of over 100 fans on a beautiful day at the Saint Joseph's Tennis Complex, the Saint Joseph's women's tennis team split its matches against La Salle and Rhode Island. Against the Explorers, the Hawks were dominant in both singles and doubles. Saint Joseph's won the match's first points, sweeping all three flights. The duo of Maggie Mullaney and Laura Matz posted an 8-0 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Tara Walsh and Kate Dowd posted the same winning margin at No. 2 doubles. Erin Malafronte and Melissa Glick earned the third win with a victory at the third flight. Switching to singles, Saint Joseph's domination continued. As a team, the Hawks lost just seven games en route to winning all six singles flights. Mullaney was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at the top flight, with Matz posting a 6-1, 6-0 win at the second flight. Esposito earned a 6-3, 6-1 win at no. 3 singles with Walsh and Dowd each going 6-0, 6-0 at fourth and fifth singles, respectively. Glick posted a win at the sixth flight to make it a clean sweep for SJU. In the morning's match, Saint Joseph's fought hard, but fell behind 1-0 early after dropping all three doubles matches 8-4. The Rams went on for victories at all six singles events to earn the 7-0 victory. Saint Joseph's wraps up weekend play Sunday at Seton Hall. The match is set for a 1 p.m. start.
