PHILADELPHIA - Facing one of the top teams in both the city and the region, the Saint Joseph's women's tennis team opened the spring portion of its schedule with a hard-fought loss at Penn, 7-0, Saturday afternoon.

Opening with doubles play, the Hawks' Aurora Davis and Kristina Eisenbrand fell to the #1-ranked team in the Northeast, and 14th nationally, Sol Eskenazi and Sonya Latycheva, 8-1. The Quakers would go on to claim the first point of the match with wins at both the second and third flights.

Switching to singles matches, the Ivy League favorites proved a challenge for the youthful SJU lineup. Playing at the top flight Davis posted a strong effort against Eskenazi, but eventually fell 6-3, 6-3. Garnering valuable experience against one of the top teams they will face all year, the Hawks continued to battle in the remaining five singles matches, but the Quakers proved too strong, earning wins in each event.

The Hawks return to action this Saturday at Navy at 8 a.m.
