LOWER MERION, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's softball team split the Rocci Pignoli/Nick Cinquanto Memorial City Six Championship crown after going undefeated against rival Philadelphia teams. The Hawks posted a 7-0 win over Drexel and 10-4 victory against Penn at the SJU Softball Field, then tied with Temple, 3-3, in the championship game as it was called due to darkness. In the opener against Drexel, the Hawks dominated on both sides of the ball. In the circle, senior Taryn Ashway and freshman Elizabeth Mendez allowed just three hits, while striking out 10 in the shutout. At the plate, senior Rochelle Christman and rookie Brandi Harkness both drove in a pair of runs, while freshman Sarah Yoos went 1-2 with a RBI. Against the Quakers, Christman led the offensive charge, collecting 4 RBIs, while going 1-3 with a triple. Sophomore Nicole Palase added a pair of hits, while senior Deanna Stinner drove in a run. Ashway and freshman Anna Lauterbach combined for the win as SJU collected its second victory to advance to the title game. Facing Atlantic 10 foe Temple for the City Six crown, the Hawks jumped out to an early lead as freshman Christina Gonzales drove in two runs, while sophomore Melissa Ruf added the third.
Unfortunately for the Hawks, the Owls would tie the game at three, and despite playing the top half of the fifth, the game was called in the middle of the inning due to darkness. |
