SAINT JOSEPH'S COMPLETES SWEEP OF FORDHAM WITH 6-2 WIN
PHILADELPHIA (03/24/02) - It may not have been as easy as the previous day, but the result was the same as the Saint Joseph's University softball team completed a three-game sweep of visiting Fordham with a 6-2 win at Drexel Field on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks, 16-1, 3-0 in Atlantic 10 play, had held the Rams, 6-17, 0-3, scoreless in a doubleheader on Saturday, winning the twinbill by a combined 17-0.
Sunday, however, was much different, as it was the Hawks who had trouble offensively in the early going. The Rams opened the game with a leadoff triple by shortstop Ivy Pollock, setting the tone for the game. SJU pitcher Brandie Adams then struck out Carol Fischer for the first out. Second baseman Amy Jones hit a slow grounder to Desiree McGhie at third and the Hawk senior tossed it to senior catcher Teresa Andreani who applied the tag to Pollock for the second out. Jones was then thrown out by Andreani attempting to steal to end the inning.
Fordham would get its lead runner on, and in scoring position in both the second and third innings as well. SJU would again close the door defensively to keep the game scoreless.
SJU finally got its first hit in the third inning as McGhie single to lead off the frame. Freshman Cara Deldeo doubled her home two outs later for the game's first run.
The Rams then tied the game on a leadoff homer by centerfielder Corrine Courtney in the fifth inning. It was her first career homer, and the team's first of the season.
Sophomore Dana Travis relieved Adams, who had allowed four hits over four plus innings, following a walk to Nicole Bilzerian, and retired the Rams in order to close out the frame.
SJU broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth, tallying five runs on four hits. The Hawks were also aided by sloppy Ram fielding as the visitors committed three errors in the inning. McGhie led things off with an infield single. Senior Megan Brown followed with a double to center to put runners at second and third. Freshman Megan Richardson then reached on an error by Jones, with McGhie scoring on the play. Deldeo then roped an RBI single with Richardson also scoring on the play on an error.
Senior Kristin Nau, who had to leave the game earlier after being spiked by a Fordham baserunner, pinch hit for freshman Robin Berry and drove home pinch runner Gale Treskot with the team's fifth run. Andreani then grounded into a fielders choice, but reached second on the play due to another Ram error. Andreani advanced to third on a wild pitch. Sophomore Lindsey McNamara, who had walked, attempted to steal second, got caught in a rundown, but kept the Fordham fielders busy while Nau scored the Hawks' sixth run.
The Rams did not go quietly as Jones led off the sixth with a triple and was driven home via a two-out single off the bat of Amanda Martynkiewicz to make the score 6-2. Travis then settled down and retired the Rams in order in the seventh for her ninth win of the season against just one loss.
The Hawks are now off until Wednesday when they are scheduled to play at Penn State (4:00 PM).
