Rosenwinkel Helps Hawks Earn Split at Rider

LAWRENCVILLE, NJ - Behind a four-RBI performance from freshman catcher Erika Rosenwinkel, the Saint Joseph's softball team earned a doubleheader split at Rider Tuesday afternoon. The Hawks dropped the opener 3-2, but won the nightcap 9-5.

In game two, the Hawks jumped out to a commanding 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Rosenwinkel got SJU on the board with a RBI single with runners on second and third. Sophomore outfielder Carly Kinkler followed an infield SJU hit with a RBI single of her own to put the Hawks up 2-0. Freshman third baseman Rebeka Shumock followed with a two-RBI-double down the left field line give Saint Joseph's its 4-0 lead.

The Hawks extended its lead to 5-0 in the top of the second on RBI double by Rosenwinkel.

Rider cut Saint Joseph's lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the third and added two more in the bottom of the fifth to come within one, 5-4.

Saint Joseph's responded in a big way in the top of the sixth, scoring four runs to take a 9-4 lead. Rosenwinkel, Kinkler and freshmen Sarah Falk and Dani Gonzales accounted for the four Hawk RBIs.

The Broncs added a run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Hawks held on for the win.

Rosenwinkel finished 4-for-4 on the day with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Kinkler and Shumock collected two RBIs apiece.

On the mound, junior Lauren Hughes allowed four runs on 10 hits, while striking out one to improve to 3-6 on the season. Sophomore Lauren Cognigni allowed one run on two hits, while striking out two over two innings of relief.
 

 

In the opener, Saint Joseph's grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top as Gonzales walked to lead off the inning. The freshman pitcher would advance all the way around to score on three Broncs wild pitches.

The Hawks extended its lead to 2-0 in the top of the sixth as Rosenwinkel hit a RBI double, scoring Gonzales from first.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, Rider plated three in the bottom of the seventh to prevail 3-2.

With the split, Saint Joseph's goes to 10-21-1 on the season, while Rider moves to 12-13.

The Hawks return to action Friday, April 7 for an Atlantic doubleheader at Dayton.
