Hawks Earn First Victory of Season versus Providence
March 8, 2006
KISSIMMEE, FL - The Saint Joseph's softball team earned its first victory of the season Tuesday as the Hawks downed Providence 5-4 in 10 innings at the Rebel Games. Saint Joseph's dropped its three prior Rebel Games contests to Yale, Saint Peter's and Maine. After struggling out of the gates this season, the Hawks got their first win of the season versus the Friars. Saint Joseph's got on the board in the bottom of the third as it plated two runs to take a 2-0 lead. Freshman Sarah Falk (Coatesville, PA/Bishop Shanahan) plated the first run for the Hawks with a RBI double, and would come around to score on a wild pitch. Providence tied the game in the top of the fifth with a two-run inning and would take a 4-2 edge in the top of the eighth. The Hawks fought back to tie it in the bottom of the eighth as junior Christa Lane Hooper scored on a throwing error by the Friars' third baseman. Falk, who reached on the error, would score the tying run on a single by classmate Erika Rosenwinkel. After holding the Friars scoreless the next two innings, the Hawks tallied a run in the bottom of the 10th as freshman Dani Gonzales drove in the winning run with an RBI single to earn the win. In the Rebel Games opener versus Maine, the Hawks sophomore hurler Lauren Cognigni allowed only two hits, while striking out eight, but it was for naught as Maine earned a 6-0 win. Versus Saint Peter's, Saint Joseph's came up short in extra innings as the Hawks fell 4-3 in eight innings. Against Yale, the Hawks got a 3-for-3 performance from Gonzales at the plate, but couldn't prevail as they fell to Yale 5-3.
