CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Saint Joseph's softball team dropped its opening game of the Cavalier Classic on Saturday, falling to host Virginia, 3-1. The Hawks' second game against Ohio was cancelled due to high winds and cold temperatures. Saint Joseph's junior Rochelle Christman picked up both Hawk hits on the day, and delivered a RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh to score Bernadette Moran. Unfortunately for the Hawks, they weren't able to tally two more runs as they fell to 3-2 overall. The Cavaliers opened the scoring in the top of the third on a RBI single by Erica Cipolloni off SJU starter Erin Gallagher. Virginia's Giannina Cipolloni would put her team up 2-0 in the top of the fifth, scoring on a wild pitch, while Lauren Didlake made it a 3-0 game in the sixth as she scored on a throwing error by SJU. Gallagher was the hard-luck loser, falling to 1-2 overall after allowing just two runs, only one of which was earned, while striking out three. Senior Lauren Pembleton worked the the final three innings, surrendering an unearned run, while striking out four. The Hawks return to action Sunday at 10 a.m. against Colgate.
