FORD'S GAME-WINNER GIVES HAWKS 1-0 WIN OVER DUQUESNE

PHILADELPHIA (10/17/03) – Senior Michelle Ford scored the game-winner in the 26th minute to lead Saint Joseph's to a 1-0 win over Duquesne on a cold, wet Friday night on Finnesey Field. Sophomore Nicole DiEnna needed to stop just three shots for her fourth shutout of the season. The Hawks (5-6-1, 3-3-0 A-10) dominated play in the first half, out shooting the visiting Dukes, 13-2 in the stanza. Midway through the period, redshirt freshman Nancy Cook sent a long through ball to Ford, who one-timed it past DU keeper Rachel Gecik (eight saves). Duquesne (6-7-2, 2-3-1)owned the second half nearly as much as SJU owned the first. The Dukes fired eight shots to the Hawks three, including two that had more than a good chance of finding the back of the net. One shot caromed off the bottom of the crossbar, hitting DiEnna in the process and nearly advancing past the goal line. Another was a 40-yard free kick that skidded on one-hop and almost bounced over DiEnna's head. For the game, SJU held a 16-10 advantage in shots. DU had two corner kicks to the Hawks' one. Saint Joseph's hosts St. Bonaventure on Sunday in a key Atlantic 10 matchup. The Hawks' three wins in the Atlantic 10 are the most conference victories since 1999 when the team went 4-6-1.
