COOK'S HAT TRICK ISN'T ENOUGH TO LIFT HAWKS OVER FORDHAM
BRONX, NY (10/12/03) - Redshirt freshman Nancy Cook recorded a hat trick but it wasn't enough to lift the Hawks over host Fordham on Sunday afternoon in the Bronx. The Rams remained unbeaten in the Altantic 10 with a 4-3 win over Saint Joseph's on Edwards' Parade. With the win,
Fordham goes to 8-3-1 on the year, 4-0-1 in the Atlantic 10, and extends its
unbeaten streak to seven games, while St. Joe's drops to 4-6-1 overall, 2-3-0 in the Atlantic 10.
Fordham opened the scoring at the 15:29 mark as Lindsey Glode scored in her second straight game on a chip shot over the top of SJU sophomore keeper goalkeeper Nicole DiEnna. The Hawks quickly tied the game just
over a minute later as Cook scored the first of three goals on the
afternoon as she took a cross from freshman Megan Schutt, and shot it past Fordham
goalkeeper Shannon Misiaszek.
Fordham regained the lead
just before halftime as Purcell scored her third of the season on a shot
from the top of the box off a half volley from Holly Laubinger. The Rams increased their lead to 3-1 at the 53:40 mark as Dunfey took a
direct kick from 30 yards out and beat Hawks' keeper Stef Luicci.
Saint
Joseph's cut the gap back to one as Cook scored her second goal of the game
off another cross by Schutt at the 56:02 mark. Just three minutes later,
Fordham pushed the lead back to two goals as Hopkins scored her team-leading
eighth goal of the year from about 22 yards out to the top right corner of
the net.
The Hawks cut the lead to 4-3 after Cook scored at
the 67:37 mark off a header from junior Marisa Barriere, but Fordham would keep the Hawks at bay for the
remainder of the game to get the win.
Schutt ended the game with three assists, tying the program record set earlier this season by classmate Kaiti McCaffery. The Sudbury, Ontario native now has 20 points (8 g, 4 a), snapping the SJU freshman scoring record held by Ellen Stenrud set in 1996. Those 20 points are third on the all-time scoring list, regardless of class.
Misiaszek made the three saves for the Rams, while DiEnna made six saves
and Luicci had two for the Hawks.
The Crimson and Gray return to action next weekend by hosting Duquesne on Friday and St. Bonaventure on Sunday.
