HAWKS WRAP UP OHIO SWING WITH 5-1 LOSS AT DAYTON

DAYTON, OH (10/05/03) --Saint Joseph's had a sour end to their Atlantic 10 western swing with Sunday's 5-1 loss at Dayton. SJU's only bright spot was the continuing emergence of freshman Megan Schutt, who scored a penalty kick in the 71st minute for her fifth goal in the last four games. For the second time in as many matches, the Flyers scored early with a goal by freshman forward Jamie Yates in the seventh minute. Yates buried a pass inside the box from sophomore forward Reba Sedlacek after a crossing pass from senior midfielder Beth McHugh. Junior midfielder Tesia Kozlowski struck for her first goal of the season, putting UD up 2-0 in the 24th minute. Kozlowski collected a loose ball, dribbled forward and blasted it from 20 yards out to the far upper corner. Just under two minutes later, senior forward Shannon Kuhl one-timed a free kick from senior defender Erin Showalter past SJU sophomore goalkeeper Nicole DiEnna. In the 32nd minute, the Flyers' lead was extended to 4-0 after a Hawk defender headed a ball into her own net. The Flyers took the lead into halftime, having outshot the Hawks, 13-2, in the opening 45 minutes. A penalty kick by Schutt at the 70:11 mark would be the only SJU scoring. Showalter fouled Lindsey Crandall in the box, and Schutt converted the PK by beating UD senior goalkeeper Stacy DeLuca to the right, lower corner. Showalter capped the scoring with her third tally of the season with just 1:57 remaining in regulation. Showalter buried the rebound after Kuhl's shot bounced off the crossbar. Kuhl was credited with the assist. The Flyers owned a 25-6 advantage in shots. DiEnna made four saves before being replaced by redshirt freshman Stef Luicci after the own goal in the 32nd minute. Luicci also collected four saves. UD again split the minutes in goal between freshman Sarah West, who made one save in the first half, and DeLuca, who made two saves in the second. SJU looks to get back on the winning track with next weekend's A-10 matchups with La Salle and Fordham.
