MUSKETEERS HAND HAWKS FIRST A-10 DEFEAT, 2-1

CINCINNATI, OH (10/03/03) -- Saint Joseph's freshman Megan Schutt scored her fourth goal in the last three games but it wasn't enough as host Xavier handed SJU its first conference defeat, 2-1, in Cincinnati on Friday evening. The Hawks drop to 3-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the Atlantic 10. The Hawks got on the board first, when Schutt scored off a cross from junior Erin Ryan on a breakaway in the 18th minute. With a little less than 11 minutes left in the first half, Xavier (5-4-1, 1-1-0) answered. Sophomore Angie Scarlato played the ball to the middle of the field and Hawk sophomore goalkeeper Nicole DiEnna came out of the goal to intercept the ball, but she mishandled it. Tracy Kennedy was right there to take advantage of the miscue and play the ball into the net from 10 yards out. XU scored what proved to be the game-winner with 11:49 left in the match. Sophomore Molly Finnerty worked the ball in from the right side and launched a shot on goal. DiEnna blocked the ball, but it deflected to the far side of the goal. Again Kennedy was in the right place to take advantage of the opportunity, and she punched the ball into the net to put the Musketeers up 2-1. SJU continues its tour of Ohio with Sunday's 1 p.m. matchup with perennial conference power Dayton.
