LEHIGH RALLIES FOR 3-2 DOUBLE OVERTIME WIN OVER SJU

PHILADELPHIA (09/26/03) – For the past three contests, 90 minutes of play hasn't been enough for the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team. The Hawks have experienced the thrill of an overtime victory with a 1-0 win over Stony Brook on September 14. They've endured the lackluster feeling after a knotted final score – a 1-1 double overtime tie courtesy of Long Island. And Friday night on Finnesey Field, SJU dealt with the agony of a double overtime defeat. Lehigh's Karilyn Anderson scored the game-winner with just 1:10 remaining in the second overtime period to break a 2-2 tie and send the Mountain Hawks (6-3-0) home with a hard-earned non-conference victory. It was the freshman's second goal of the game and it couldn't have come at a better time for the Patriot League squad. Adrienne Grunwald sent the indirect kick across the box and Gina Lewandowski (two assists) deflected the ball just enough to give Anderson a good luck at the cage. She beat SJU (2-3-1) keeper Nicole DiEnna to the near side to end the contest in the 109th minute. Early on, it looked like the Hawks would go over the .500 mark heading into Monday's Atlantic 10 opener at Temple. Freshman Megan Schutt took a pass from junior Marisa Barriere and found the back of the net at the 37:01 mark to give SJU a 1-0 lead. Barriere followed 16 minutes later off a pass from junior Cristin Harris. But from that point on, it was all Lehigh. Freshman Meghan Duesing got the Mountain Hawks within one in the 75th minute off a pass from junior Jocelyn Helwig. Then with five minutes remaining in regulation, Anderson tied the score to knot things up at two. She would score on a similar play for the game-winner. DiEnna made nine stops in 108:50 minutes, while Erin Iwaskiewicz stopped seven at the other end. Lehigh held a 19-13 lead in shots and a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
