HAWKS, BLACKBIRDS BATTLE TO 1-1 TIE
BROOKLYN, NY (09/17/03) -- Depending on the view of the glass, it may be half-full or half-empty. SJU head coach Jess Reynolds is faced with that question on the ride down the New Jersey Turnpike tonight after her team continued its strong play defensively, only to have a tough time finding the back of the net.
For the second straight game, the Hawks managed only a single goal as SJU (2-2-1) tied Long Island, 1-1, in double overtime Wednesday night in Brooklyn. After erupting for four goals against Drexel on September 2, St. Joe's has tickled the twine just twice in its past three contests.
After a scoreless first half, LIU's (1-4-1) Jackie McCormick put some lights on the scoreboard with her goal in the 53rd minute. Just 15 minutes later, the Hawks tied the score on a sophomore Alisha Paine goal. Senior Michelle Ford and freshman Megan Schutt assisted on the goal.
The teams would continue to play for another 40 plus minutes, 110 in all, but neither squad could score. Saint Joseph's sophomore keeper Nicole DiEnna continued her solid play in net, making eight saves. She has allowed just one goal in her past 200 minutes in between the pipes.
Long Island held a 20-17 advantage in shots and a 16-6 lead in fouls. SJU had one more corner kick in the contest, at 5-4.
The Hawks return to the pitch on Saturday when they take on Towson at 1:00 p.m. This game was changed from Friday afternoon in order to accomodate for the impending weather.
