RYAN'S GOLDEN GOAL GIVES HAWKS OVERTIME WIN
PHILADELPHIA (09/14/03) – Junior Erin Ryan picked the perfect time to score her first collegiate goal. The Hawk forward took senior Michelle Ford's cross that slipped through the hands of Stony Brook's Cindy Bennett and deposited it into the open net to give Saint Joseph's (2-2-0) a 1-0 overtime victory.
Neither team could manage many scoring opportunities throughout the game. SJU controlled possession for most of the first half, but a Ryan shot midway through the stanza was the only real scoring threat. The Hawks out shot the Seawolves, 6-3, in the half.
The tides turned in the second half, with SBU (1-2-1) controlling things offensively. Sophomore keeper Nicole DiEnna turned away four shots to keep the game knotted at zero. Overtime brought more of the midfield game, but the Hawks were able to take advantage of a Ford run down the far sideline with 3:36 to go.
The co-captain sent a left-footed pass across the box that Bennett dove for. Unfortunately for the Long Island visitors, the ball slipped through her hands onto the right foot of Ryan, who found the back of the net for the first time in her SJU career.
SJU travels to Long Island University on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. matchup with the Blackbirds.
