WOMEN'S SOCCER NORWEGIAN TOUR: DAY 3

ASKER, NORWAY (08/17/03) -- The third day of the Norwegian trip left seniors Lindsey Crandall and Lauren Susco with some time to see Norway and earn a victory in the team's first preseason match. --- Finally after two full weeks of preseason we got a morning to relax before our first international match. Although we could have spent the time catching up on our sleep, some of us decided to capitalize on the opportunity to explore Norway. We took a 266 kroner train ride south of Asker through beautiful country to a little town called Tønsberg. Upon our arrival, we realized that it was Sunday so no stores would be open. Lucky for us, we were able to save money because of this. With our bags and our keen sense of direction, we set off to explore the town. We saw the beautiful Tønsberg Cathedral as well as numerous historical statues. We caught a glimpse of a flag on top of a hill and decided to head towards it. Along the way, we strolled down a cute alley way and took numerous pictures. However since we're women, we soon realized the flag was behind us. We found a gas station and politely asked for directions. The attendent spoke broken English and had to take us outside to point to the destination. After 10 minutes of hand motions and a guessing game, we were back on track. Eventually, we made it to the flag and found the ruins from castrum Tønsberg, Tønsberghouse. The site itself was called Slottsfjellet, and was 63 meters above sea level. From that height, we were able to get a spectacular view of the surrounding area. There was water and a ship yard to one side and the town to the other side. After this great morning, we caught the train again to come back and get ready for a BBQ at (former assistant coach) Ellen's (Stenrud) house. Upon our arrival, we found a home straight out of Better Homes and Gardens. We were served a twenty-course meal and entertained by her family. We hung out there while digesting until her teammates showed up to drive us to the soccer field. The game went very well. We have been working very hard and it was finally time for us to show where we are. We won 8-0, and proved to ourselves and our coaches how good we truly are. We were able to see a lot of good things, and also know what we need to work on before our game on Wednesday. --Lindsey Crandall and Lauren Susco
