XAVIER TOPS SAINT JOSEPH'S, 3-1

PHILADELPHIA, PA (11/01/02) – Saint Joseph's jumped on the board first but three unanswered goals by visiting Xavier vaulted the Musketeers to a 3-1 victory on a bitter Friday night on Finnesey Field. In the 10th minute, senior midfielder Jodi Young found herself alone on the right side and sent a perfect boot from 25-yards out to the top right corner, just under the crossbar, to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead. Classmate Katie Watson tallied the assist on the goal, Young's third of the season. The goal sent a small, but raucous St. Joe's crowd into a frenzy. Unfortunately for the Hawk faithful, the lead only held for another 19 minutes as XU's (9-9-0, 5-5-0) Molly Finnerty sent a ball to Lindsay Yonadi who beat SJU (4-11-1, 1-8-1) keeper Christy Ganc to the top right shelf. The 29th minute tally tied the game at one. Ten minutes later, Xavier's Lauren Giesting fired a shot into the open left corner after faking Ganc to the right side of the cage. The game-winner closed the scoring in the first half. Xavier added insurance in the 80th minute as Angie Scarlato tallied a goal of her own to the near side from inside the box. Ganc made five saves in the defeat, while Megan Veith stopped two shots for the win. XU held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks and outshot the host Hawks, 14-6. Saint Joseph's returns for their final game of the season, Senior Day, on Sunday, November 3, when they host Dayton at noon. The contest will mark the final game in the careers of SJU seniors Ganc, Watson, Young, Kim Miller, Kellie Woolcock, and Danielle Gregoire.
