HAWKS CAUGHT IN SPIDERS' WEB, FALL TO RICHMOND, 2-0
PHILADELPHIA, PA (10/20/02) – Two well-placed shots from well outside the box were the difference on Finnesey Field on Sunday afternoon as Richmond downed Saint Joseph's, 2-0. The loss upped SJU's (4-8-1, 1-5-1) winless streak to a program record seven games.
Both teams controlled the ball equally in the first half, as evidenced by the nine shots fired by each team. Richmond (8-4-2, 5-2-0), however, used supreme ball-control in the second half to muster ten more opportunities on the second stanza, and was able to convert on two of them.
In the 63rd minute, Molly Rettig dribbled to an opening on the left side and booted a shot from 25 yards out. The ball was just out of the reach of an outstretched Christy Ganc, perfectly placed in the top left corner.
Edda Gardarsgottir followed for Richmond 14 minutes later, as her direct kick from 25 yards out found the top right shelf, giving Richmond a 2-0 advantage.
Ganc made eight saves in the game, giving her 79 for the season, good for fourth all-time at SJU in a single season. She now has 221 career saves, just eight saves out of second place for career saves on Hawk Hill.
At the other end, Samantha Honig made six saves in the shutout win. The Spiders out shot SJU, 19-12 on the game and held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Saint Joseph's returns to action on Friday at Rhode Island with game time at 7 pm.
