COLONIAL OUTBURST PROPELS G.W. OVER SAINT JOSEPH'S, 3-1

PHILADELPHIA, PA (10/18/02) – For roughly 89 minutes Friday night on Finnesey Field, both the George Washington and Saint Joseph's women's soccer teams played an evenly matched contest. But for 35 seconds in the 68th minute, the Colonials sent two goals past Hawk goalie Christy Ganc, turning a tie ballgame into a 3-1 lead. It was all the Atlantic 10 rival needed to get past the Hawks, who fell to 4-7-1 on the season and 1-4-1 in the conference. George Washington (6-7-0, 3-3-0) got on the board first, as the A-10's leading goal scorer, Kim Warner, scored unassisted from just outside the 18 in the 39th minute. Her shot beat Ganc to the right corner for her 11th goal of the season. SJU was able to respond in the second half, as junior Michelle Ford took a pass from senior Katie Watson on the left side and found the far corner for her second goal of the fall. The tally tied the score at one in the 57th minute. The game remained deadlocked for another 11 minutes, but the Colonials put together 35 seconds of offense to seal the game. First Ina Kain fired a direct kick from the 20-yard mark into the back of the net, which turned out to be the game-winner. G.W. gained possession off the tap and Warner sent a beautiful ball to a streaking Sarah Minnich on the left side. Minnich made the most of the opportunity, as she scored the insurance goal in the contest. The outburst took the wind out of the Hawk's sails, and Saint Joseph's couldn't muster another goal. Ganc made six saves in the contest, while Kelly Paolucci stopped three shots for the win. G.W. outshot the Crimson and Gray, 14-13 in the match. Saint Joseph's returns to the pitch on Sunday at noon when they host A-10 rival Richmond.
