FORDHAM BREAKS AWAY FROM SJU IN 2-1 DOUBLE OVERTIME WIN

PHILADELPHIA, PA (10/06/02) - For the third time in a week, the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team had their collective hearts broken. Last Sunday, it was an overtime loss at Villanova that did the trick. On Friday, an own goal in the 88th minute doomed SJU against La Salle. In Sunday's Atlantic 10 matchup, a Jackie Aines breakaway goal with eight seconds remaining in double overtime gave the Rams a 2-1 win, sending the Hawks home with their third straight defeat. The breakaway developed after Saint Joseph's (4-5, 1-2) had their backs pushed up to provide extra support on corner kick with 36 seconds to go. The threat went astray as the Rams' defense headed the ball out to a waiting Aines, who dribbled 75-plus yards before making a move on SJU keeper Christy Ganc, and tapped the ball into the back of the net. The Crimson and Gray dominated control in the first ten minutes of the game, but could only muster one shot on goal in the early going. The Rams (5-6, 1-2) then took control and fired five shots on Ganc, who made several acrobatic saves to keep the Hawks in the game. Thirteen minutes into the second half, Fordham's Corey Dunfey headed a corner kick from Erin Safarik past Ganc for the first goal of the game. The Rams continued to possess the ball for most of the second half, but a Hawk burst left senior Jodi Young with an opening on the right side. The midfielder booted it to the top left-shelf from 25 yards out past Fordham keeper Shannon Misiaszek to tie the game in the 83rd minute. In the first overtime, the Rams had two opportunities in the 95th minute, but one shot was blocked and the other sailed over the net. The final minute was frantic, first as a Michelle Carmosky shot flew wide for SJU, but resulted in the aforementioned corner kick. A scrum inside the box resulted in the clear by Fordham and the one-on-one match between Aines and Ganc in the closing seconds. Ganc made seven saves in the contest while Misiaszek needed to stop just two shots to earn the win. The Rams held the advantage in shots, 19-5, while SJU had a slight edge in corner kicks, 6-5. Saint Joseph's looks to return to their winning ways next weekend as they travel to Duquesne (Friday, 7 pm) and St. Bonaventure (Sunday, 1 pm).
