GANC SHUTS OUT STAGGS, 1-0, FOR THIRD STRAIGHT BLANKING
FAIRFIELD, CT (09/20/02) - Senior Christy Ganc saved the day on defense and junior Michelle Ford scored the game-winner to propel the Hawks over Fairfield, 1-0, on Friday night. For Saint Joseph's, it marked their third straight victory, all shutouts, since a 2-1 loss to Delaware on September 4. The Hawks improve to 3-2 on the season with the win and ruined the Staggs first-ever game on Lessing Field.
Ford's first goal of the season came in the 38th minute off a corner kick that found a home in the far corner of the net.
In the 85th minute, Fairfield's (1-5) Maureen Miller made a move at the 18, freeing herself from the Hawk defense and fired a shot that looked like it would tie the game at one. But Ganc made a diving save, one of her six on the game, to preserve the shutout, her third straight. The three straight blankings tie a program record, most recently attained by Colleen Corcoran and the 1999 Hawk squad. Since the opener against then #6 Virginia, Ganc and the SJU defense have allowed just two goals in their last 360 minutes.
Fairfield actually outshot the Hawks, 16-9 on the game, but couldn't find the back of the net.
Saint Joseph's kicks off their conference schedule on Friday, September 27, when they host Temple at 7 pm.
