CARMOSKY NETS TWO TO LEAD HAWKS OVER BUCKNELL, 2-0
PHILADELPHIA, PA (09/17/02) - Freshman Michelle Carmosky just wants to get the job done and tonight she did just that. The Hawk forward scored both goals for Saint Joseph's (2-2) in a 2-0 shutout win over Bucknell (5-2).
In the 15th minute, Carmosky took a corner kick off the foot of junior Michelle Ford and deflected the header just enough to change its direction past Bison keeper Laurie Purse. SJU continued to dominate control in the first half, that included several long-range shots that missed just over the cross bar.
After the halftime intermission, Carmosky struck again, this time on a bouncing ball inside the 18. The Harleysville, Pa. native used her left boot to send it past Purse on the short-side for her second collegiate goal. It was all that the Hawks needed to even their record at 2-2 on the young season.
Senior Christy Ganc tossed her second straight shutout, the first Hawk to post back-to-back shutouts since Colleen Corcoran did the trick twice in the 1999 campaign.
“Coach [Jess Reynolds] wanted me to come here to do a job and I felt like I completed that job tonight,” Carmosky, a preseason Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team member, said. After starting the season with a 7-0 loss at then #6 Virginia and then a tough 2-1 loss at the hands of Delaware, the Hawks had a 11-day layoff before beating Drexel, 1-0, on Sunday.
During that stretch, a confidence developed in the team, a team that starts three freshmen. “The whole team knows we have the potential to win and the talent to win. We realize that and we want to prove that to everyone,” Carmosky said.
The Crimson and Gray have one more non-conference tune-up on Friday at Fairfield at 6 p.m. before starting their Atlantic 10 schedule on September 27 against Temple.
