BLUE HENS NIP HAWKS IN 85TH MINUTE, 2-1

PHILADELPHIA, PA (09/04/02) – Delaware’s Caryn Blood scored in the 85th minute to foil a Saint Joseph’s comeback attempt and propel the Blue Hens to a 2-1 victory in the Hawk’s home opener at Finnesey Field on Wednesday. Blood fired a shot from the 18 that deflected off a Hawk defender and into the back of the net past a diving Christy Ganc (Hockessin, Del. / St. Mark’s.) Blood’s goal came just over a minute after SJU rallied back from a 1-0 deficit as senior Kim Miller (West Lawn, Pa. / Wilson) deflected a senior Jodi Young (East Greenville, Pa. / Upper Perkiomen) pass into the cage to tie the game at one for the Hawks’ first goal of the season. The first half was evenly matched and played mostly in transition. Still, Delaware had two scoring threats thwarted by diving saves by Ganc, who was shaken up early in the half after colliding with a teammate in mid-air for a 50-50 ball. The Blue Hens dominated the second half beginning with the game’s first goal, a one-timer by Francesca Termini just after the halftime intermission. Brittany Campbell was credited with the assist. Despite playing mostly in their own end, Saint Joseph’s managed a run that ended in Miller’s goal and brought life to the Hawk squad. But Blood’s goal sucked the life from the Crimson and Gray with her goal just a minute later. Ganc made six saves in the cage for the Hawks, while Andrea Lunn made four at the other end. The Hens out shot SJU, 14-5 and held an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks. Saint Joseph’s begins an 11-day layoff before returning to action on Sunday, September 15 at Drexel.
