#6 VIRGINIA DOWNS SAINT JOSEPH'S, 7-0, IN SEASON OPENER

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (8/31/02) - The nation's sixth ranked women's soccer team proved that their lofty preseason ranking was warrented as the Virginia Cavaliers downed Saint Joseph's, 7-0, in front of nearly one thousand fans in Charlottesville. Virginia's number six ranking marked the higheset ranked team that the Hawks have played against in the program's history.

The season opener for both teams saw the Cavs dominate the first half of play, outshooting the Hawks 21-0 on their way to a 6-0 lead going into the halftime intermission.

UVa added a second half goal to finish the scoring. Virginia outshot the Hawks 35-2 for the game and held a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Senior Christy Ganc made eight saves in net for SJU. Saint Joseph's returns on Wednesday in their home opener against Delaware. Game time is 4:00 pm.
