UMASS TOPS SJU, 1-0, IN DOUBLE OVERTIME
PHILADELPHIA (10/19/01) -The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team lost a heartbreaking Atlantic 10 match to Massachusetts, 1-0, in double overtime on Friday evening on Finnesey Field. Junior Christy Ganc recorded 10 stops for the Hawks in goal.
Saint Joseph's dominated in every way but could not hold on in the second overtime period when Minutewoman Stephanie Santos converted on an assist from Erica Wideberg in the 111th minute.
The Hawks played aggressively and were relentless during regulation play forcing UMass (9-3, 6-0 in Atlantic 10 play) into overtime.
"We played with a lot of dedication and a lot of heart," said coach Jess Reynolds. "We can't be disappointed with our performance against a team like UMass."
Offensively SJU posted solid numbers, tallying 10 shots to Massachusetts' 11. The Hawks, who fall to 4-6-2 overall, 1-3-2 in conference play will host to Rhode Island, Sunday, at noon. It will also be Senior Day for SJU as three seniors, Laurie Muller, Lauren Rozanski and Kim Dwyer will be honored as they play their last home game on Finnesey turf.
