Wean's Late Goal Lifts Hawks Past Marist, 2-1, in Women's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's senior forward Ali Wean headed in the game-winning goal with 11 seconds remaining as the Hawks beat Marist, 2-1, in women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Finnesey Filed. With the game tied 1-1 in the final minute, Saint Joseph's pressed the ball into the midfield. Saint Joseph's freshman Lauren Sutcliffe gathered a bouncing ball and lobbed it over the last Marist defender. As the ball bounced, Wean gathered behind it and headed it over Marist's goalkeeper, Caitlin Nazarechuk, into the empty net for the game-winner. Following a scoreless first half, the Hawks opened the scoring in the 63rd minute as Wean took a centering pass from classmate Megan Schutt and beat Nazarechuk to the left side of the goal. Marist answered back 20 minutes later off a scramble in front of the Saint Joseph's goal. Hawks' junior goalkeeper Jen Kuhn came out to play a ball to the left of the goal, but had it kicked out of her reach by a Marist player towards the SJU net. Following a blocked first shot, the Red Foxes' Justine Caccamo controlled a rebound and found the empty net at 82:20. The score remained the same until the waning moments of the game as Wean tallied her second goal of the game For the game, Saint Joseph's out shot Marist 17-9 and held a 9-2 edge in corners. Individually, Kuhn made one save for the victory, while Wean collected a game high four points for her two goals. Schutt and Sutcliffe each earned a point for their assists. At the other end, Nazarechuk made a game-high five saves for the Red Foxes. With the win, the Hawks improve to 3-6-0 on the season, while Marist falls to 2-6-0.
